He even added a fully functional lift to one of the Truro fire engines. Totten modeled everything as accurately as possible. He even managed to add working fire hoses, burning buildings and the exact activation sound that plays when someone is calling in to the Truro fire department. He added firetrucks that are exact replicas of those at the Truro fire station. Having a background with both the Debert and Truro fire departments, Totten decided to make much of the gameplay focused on firefighting. Many of the finer details are a product of the program he uses to design objects, along with an extraordinary amount of time and dedication on Totten’s part. Making streets to scale required Totten to model his geometry according to the distances pulled from Google Maps. “When we run stuff in Debert, it takes us 10 minutes to get from the fire hall to the Tim Hortons, it’s accurate driving times,” he said. His attempt inspired him to build everything to scale. “I’ve been on this platform since 2012, but I never started building things 'till around 2019 when I tried building Debert,” Totten explained. Though it has taken him a great amount of time, his previous experience with Roblox has given him an edge in terms of designing his world. Totten had to meticulously design each street, building, vehicle and command. Rebuilding Truro was no easy task – it was not as simple as pushing a button and letting the pieces fall into place. Landmarks such as the Colchester-East Hants Library, police station, fire station, town hall and mall have all been constructed accurately and to scale.Īndrew Totten now volunteers his time to the Debert Fire Brigade. Totten constructed the entirety of Truro’s downtown, as well as parts of Robie Street and beyond. This is when he decided to replicate Truro in Roblox, a massive online video game that allows players to build and play in a custom-designed world. Totten looked for something to sink his time into - something engaging and productive, something that could help him stay connected with friends and even meet some new ones. His life had suddenly become like most during March 2020 – isolated and mundane. In his second year of high school at the time, he had been doing a volunteer placement with Truro Fire Service that abruptly ended three days in. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Debert resident Andrew Totten was left with little to do but wait for it to be over.
